Home Office Ergonomics

Office ergonomics are a vital factor in creating a comfortable and healthy work environment. Dictionary.com defines ergonomics as: The applied science of equipment design, as for the workplace, intended to maximize productivity by reducing operator fatigue and discomfort; in addition, called biotechnology, human engineering, human factors engineering. If you neglect these suggestions you may find yourself feeling fatigued, tired, or even in pain. These guidelines follow the standard rules used when trying to create functional healthy work environments. This is not voodoo or preference. These guidelines are the result of several studies across a broad range of corporate environments.

One of the most important items in your home office is right beneath you, your chair. It is important to acquire a good quality chair. Just as it is important to have good quality shoes if you are standing all day it is equally important to have a good chair if you spend the majority of your time sitting. The chair must be adjustable. This is not an option but a requirement. It is rare to find two body types and personal preferences that are identical so it is imperative that the chair adjusts to meet the needs of who is sitting in it. some of these adjustments include but are not limited to:

Adjustable seat height

Adjustable lumbar

Adjustable headrest

Adjustable armrests

Adjustable back angle

Adjustable overall angle

These are not the only factors to consider when purchasing a desk chair. It must be able to tilt or recline to allow for position changes throughout the day. It must fit close enough to the desk to allow proper access to the keyboard, mouse, and any other item you may use. The cushion or suspension system needs to be top quality and support you well below and behind with no discomfort. The back cushion should follow the natural curve of your spine as much as possible. The chair must be able to swivel and roll. Even if you don't plan on moving much you would be surprised at how much you do move while seated.

Keep in mind that no matter how good of a chair you buy you need to get up for brief periods throughout the day to stretch or walk around. This will promote blood flow and loosen the joints and muscles in your entire body.

The next item is the desk. The desk should be the proper height to match the chair. When seated your arms should bend at a 90º or slightly more never less. Your hands should rest gently on the keyboard coming straight off your wrists not bending upwards.

Now you need to consider the size of the desk itself. It needs to be large enough to fit the items on it that are needed. Computer monitor, keyboard and mouse are typically the most important items. You may also need room for source documents, phone, notepad, or any other items you use on a daily basis. Position the items you use the most nearest you. The monitors should be far enough away from you for comfortable viewing. Two feet is about as close as you want the average sized (17") monitor. Larger screens should be placed farther apart.

Make sure that there is enough room under the desk to place your legs comfortably. There should be no obstacles below the desk to get in the way of your feet.

If a keyboard platform is used make sure that it does not obstruct you legs or chair movement. The keyboard and the mouse need to be on the same level so ensure that this is the case in any desk you consider.

Document holders can greatly aid in reducing desktop clutter, eye strain, and undo muscle strain due to awkward typing positions. These are inexpensive and should be easily obtained.

Your keyboard should be adequate size however it should not be so large that it requires large movements by your hands while typing. Make sure it has all the standard buttons and not too many additional buttons. Make sure that all additional buttons are placed outside of the standard typing area.

Your monitor is of primary importance. Eye strain and fatigue can be murderous to an online entrepreneur Make sure you acquire high quality monitors that can be easily adjusted for optimum brightness and contrast. The top line of text should align with the eye level of the user. This may require raising the monitor. Make sure you adjust the text on your screen to be easily legible and to reduce the amount of strain on your eyes and neck.

If you follow these simple guidelines you should be able to create an ergonomically pleasing home office.

Home Office Setup

Setting up a home office is really quite simple (and fun). One benefit to the home office is that you are the head cheese. There is no one there dictating how you are to set up the office. You can create any environment you would like, that will help motivate you to get to work.

With this said you need to remember that distractions are bad. Adding a TV or a video game machine will not help your productivity. Keep the items in the office focused around what you need to do.

Make the office as comfortable as possible. Get a good office chair, desk and a decent computer monitor. Set the desk up following the standard ergonomic guidelines found in the "Office Ergonomic" section of our website.

Try to find a room with good lighting. Make sure it is heated in the winter and cooled in the summer. So many people work in their basement and have to run extra HVAC ducting to keep them comfortable when working.

Obviously there will be factors that may keep you from creating the perfect work environment but do your best to create an environment that promotes productivity.

Homemade Product Confidence

Sometimes you might come across a product that you have created but are unsure if it is useful or appealing enough to market on the internet. This is not a good reason to pass this opportunity on by. In fact, this is the perfect reason to give it a try. It is an attitude like that that keeps people from marketing on the internet. Having the attitude that supports the statement "I'll try anything just once" is great when it comes to selling on the internet.

Think about it. There is very little cost involved in selling on the internet and therefore there is very little risk. The worst that could happen is that it does not sell. Where are you then, right where you were before you tried? There are very few investment opportunities that have that kind of guaranty.

After a very short search we found on the internet seller who is selling homemade dog treats including truffles, treats and even lollipops. Although she is not bursting with sales she probably does not regret the decision 600+ sales later? There is absolutely no reason to give it a try.

Diversifying Your Product Line

Having an open and active attitude toward your product sourcing will go a long way when it comes to finding successful products on the internet. You must diversify. Many entrepreneurs find themselves struggling with finding the right product niche for them. They think they have found just the right product just to find that thousands of others have done the same and are already flooding the online market. The key here is to find new product niches and trends in lesser thought of markets. Loose the tie that binds you to a specific product or product type.

The key here is to attempt to see possible products in everything you do. Let your mind become a product sourcing computer that takes notes on products it sees every day. If you are mowing your grass, try and think of all the products that might be useful in that endeavor. Weed whackers, fertilizer spreaders, gardening gloves, etcetera. After you finish with the yard let's say you decide to barbecue up some burgers. Now you need to look around again and take stock of everything you might be able to source and market on the internet. Grill utensils, cleaners, cookbooks, grill covers, and patio chairs are a great start but by no means a complete list of items you could look into.

Listing Titles A listing title should be considered a mini version of the listing description. It should include the name of the item as well as the model number, part number, model, brand, or any other item descriptor. You should include the condition the item is in, or any external identifiers like color, size, or type.

You should also include a short but focused description of the item. It is important that the buyer knows exactly what the listing is for. Do not mislead or misguide a buyer. You will most certainly be brushed off if this is the case.

A good example is the sellers on the internet that are selling iPod knock offs. These mp3 players are just fine however they are not the actual Apple product. they look like it and seem to be it in every way however they are not the genuine product. It is important that the buyer knows this before entering the listing or they will just bounce from your listing to another more accurate listing. It is a very good practice to always be honest in your descriptions as well as your dealings. Just because two items are similar does not mean they are the same

You should also include a short but focused description of the item. It is important that the buyer knows exactly what the listing is for. Do not mislead or misguide a buyer. You will most certainly be brushed off if this is the case.

Media Industry

Identifying niche products in media (TV, Movies, and Music) can be both fun and rewarding. What would you say to me if I told you could make a fair amount of money by researching TV shows or movies? How about if I said you could start bringing in cash right away by keeping an eye on the music industry?

Well this is very true and you can get started right away. Have you ever noticed the plethora of products that are sold with a movie name plastered all over it as soon as the movie is released? In some cases the promotional products are released before the movie is released. The next time a kids movie or an action movie is released keep an eye on the video game releases. You may be surprised at how efficient the movie studios are on getting these products on the shelves. Weeks before the latest Harry Potter movie was released there were backpacks, Lego's, coloring books, and any other kid's item you can think of on the shelves at the local mega mart?

The movie, TV, and music studios are doing so why can't you? There are several sources online for movie and TV news, reviews and gossip for upcoming projects. The absolute best site for this sort of information is the International Movie Data Base (IMDB). This site is chock full of information. From movies that are opening soon to projects several years off, they have it all. You could literally spend an entire month (or more) browsing this site and gathering information you can use to your advantage.

For instance, as of today the movie Underdog is in the "Coming Soon' category. This is helpful because you could start to gather underdog merchandise, assuming you can get it at a price that will sell even if the movie bombs. Another tidbit I just found on the site is that the live action version of The Hobbit is apparently in production slated for release in 2009. This is great news. Based on the success of the Lord of the Rings trilogy you can bet that even if this movie is two to three hours of crap three will still be a marketing frenzy. I'd bet you can find copies of the original cartoon version of The Hobbit at a very reasonable price right now. It may be possible to find old posters, action characters, and other toys as well. Now 2009 is a long way off but keep this in mind, the closer the release comes the more likely it will be that you will not be able to source the products as cheap. Right now not many people are thinking about this and that is to your advantage. This requires some creativity as well as some forecasting or, for lack of a better term, guess work on your part. DO NOT test your limits on this type of niche product sourcing. What I mean is that this is a sort of gamble. As stated before, do not purchase an item for any price that you cannot sell it for without the movie or TV release, this ads a certain level of security. It's always been a good rule when entering any sort of investment that you should not invest more money than you can easily replace through normal means.

Now for the music, although not as thorough (few sites are) as the IMDB, All Music is a very good source for finding out about the latest music releases, who's hot right now, and most importantly what band is searched the most. They have a nice "Top Searches" function in the top right side of their site. This gives you a very good idea about what music you should be able to sell on the internet. It also stands to reason that if a band is about to release or has just released a new album their old albums see a boost in sales. This would be a very good niche product to

promote on the internet. You can also focus some energy on movie posters, CD singles, t-shirts, ring tones, stickers, or just about anything you can think of that has to do with that artist.

These are all good ways to be ahead of the game at identifying niche markets within the media industries.
